Our last lecture for New World included a short talk from Dr. Jarvis. She is an accomplished chemist who has a lot of experience with poster sessions. Before her talk I was feeling pretty nervous about how to design one of these large posters for our own Dog Days poster session, but her stories and advice helped me feel more confident in what lie ahead. She advised us to make the poster in powerpoint in a 35x35in format. She said it is best to use as few words as possible and to kind of build out a bare bone skeleton of what you wanted to say about your project.
She told us to feel free to meet the people who are coming up to your poster too and not be afraid to initiate friendly conversation unrelated to your project. She also told us to create a relay script to help us all tell the story of our project. I really enjoyed her talk, she was humorous, confident and was well versed in this topic. It gave me a lot of inspiration for our Dog Days poster and her story about how she fully explained her project to a Nobel peace prize winner helped me feel more confident and comfortable about sharing our story to our guests at the final poster session.
Overall, even though her talk was short it taught me everything I needed know about the upcoming poster session. Growing up, I also did a lot of science fairs so I was excited to exercise that part of my brain again with our M4G poster session. Come time for our final session, Dr. Jarvis was there and came up to our table to learn about our poster and project and I was excited to show her what I learned! She was impressed so, mission accomplished!
